Case Study : CSULB Recreation and Wellness Center

California State University, Long Beach sits hilltop of a 322-acre campus overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Eighty percent buildings house various colleges, 63 academic departments and programs, 24 centers, four institutes and four clinics.  Among the 24 centers, one, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) located on the east end of the campus, took two years to build and is the house of a variety of non-credit fitness classes.  The SRWC was created to develop and expand skills related to the latest fitness trends including yoga, Pilates, Kickboxing, Self Defense, Ab Burner, Butts and Gutts, Hip Hop Cardio, Zumba, Boot Camp, Pump and Sculpt, Cardio Crunch and Spinning.

Project Summary

CSULB broke ground on the 125,000 square foot two story Student Recreation and Wellness Center in January of 2009.  In August 2010, the SRWC became the first building on the CSULB campus to be certified “Gold” Center by Leadership in Energy and Environmental design green building certification system.  The eco-friendly, state-of-the-art building features many technological advances, including biometric hand scanners for entry, filter water fountains, digital bulletin boards, LCD touch screens, digital lockers, adjustable lighting, hydration stations and waterless urinals.  When California State University, Long Beach looked for partners to build a center whose door will open to over 4,000+ individuals a day and is the hub of recreation, intramural sports, fitness activities and wellness services, they turned to Advantage Fitness Products to provide a fitness facility for their students, facility and alumni that they envisioned for more than 10 years in the making.

Results

AFP worked with Robert Lowrey, Project Coordinator University Student Union, Dave Edwards, Director of Associated Students and Mark Zakhour, Senior construction manager for the university’s Physical Planning and Construction Management unit, numerous sub-contractors, city officials and manufactures to create a place for students, faculty, staff and alumni to exercise, study, hang out and provide opportunities for student employment and internships.  The Student Recreation and Wellness Center offer a full complement of equipment and services including 200 cardiovascular machines, 100 strength stations, 3 Indoor Basketball Courts, Multi Activity Court, 27-foot Rock Climbing Wall, Racquet Ball Courts, Spinning Area, Functional Training Space, Aerobic Rooms, Pilates, Indoor Boxing, Jogging Track, Sand Volley Ball Court, Outdoor Swimming and Lap Pool.  The AFP team headed by University Channel Director Wil Morrise, spent two years assisting in a multitude of aspects in respect to planning, design and developing this modern fitness facility.  AFP continues to provide operational support in the form of our FitnessFacility.com platform, an online management and resource tool that assist the SRWC staff in managing their enormous equipment inventory, service and purchasing of replenishables.
